ART NEWS
by Valerie Kabov

The following is an extract from Why Art? May 2009 newsletter by Renaissance aic*.

Australian Marketplace:

The Australian May sales did not provide Australian auction houses with as much joy as their international counterparts but considering that Australian market does not attract the breadth of customer base and along with the Australian economy trails the world by around a semester, the results were not too shabby. The much anticipated May 4 sale by Sotheby’s of the Ken & Rona Eastaugh Collection in Melbourne yielded $1,523,950 selling 63% by value and 87% by volume and yield not a shabby outcome in the current climate. Among the interesting “star” unsold lots was Arthur Streeton’s Circular Quay estimated at $200,000 to $300,000 and The Incoming Tide $120,000 to $150,000 as well as Rupert Bunny’s The Falling Star estimated at between $160,000 and $200,000. The following day’s Sotheby's Important Australian Art sale yielded $2,844,900 on the hammer selling 73% and 57% clearance by volume with several auction favourites failing to find a home. The most curious result by far was on May 6 at Bonhams & Goodman, which delivered $2,407,450 on the hammer with an unusual 114% clearance on the value with only a 78% clearance by volume and no record prices and not finding a punter for Arthur Boyd’s Starry Night!

Sydney Public Affairs:

Art Gallery Of New South Wales (to July 19) Double Take: Anne Landa Award 2009 in all honesty, we have some misgivings about discussing this the award, which is dedicated to new media work. While the 2007 installment, which featured works of artists like Daniel Crooks and Daniel von Sturmer, could still be viewed and discussed as visual art, there is scarcely a work in the current award, which qualifies as such. It puts us under some urgency to address the issue of difference between medium in genre, which seems sorely neglected by curators and artists alike in this country. We don’t pretend to be theatre critics or film critics, dance critics or even performance art critics. We feel it is important to understand the nature and the limits of one’s discipline and one’s expertise. More on this in future newsletters.
