Exhibition: The Printed Image - Marnling Press & Whaling Road Studio @ Wilson Street Gallery.
Limited edition and unique state prints from collaborative printmakers Michelle Perry and Diana Davidson exploring the possibilities
of print media, with significant Australian contemporary artists. Also showing Rafael Butron and Anne Starling from Grip Editions
Limited edition prints: a collector’s dream
Wilson Street Gallery is bringing the art of printmaking out of the studio and into the spotlight with an exhibition showcasing limited edition
prints created in collaboration with significant Australia contemporary artists. Works by Elisabeth Cummings, Anne Thomson, Jasper Knight, Alun-Leach Jones,
Dorothy Ngapangardi, James McGrath and David Serisier, will be featured.
Michelle Perry from Marnling Press said that both she and Diana Davidson from Whaling Rd Press had mastered the complexity of this art over many hard years.
“Above all, we have learned to tune in to the vision and aesthetic of each artist that we work with”, she said. “The resulting collaboration is unique and at
times breathtaking.”
Gallery Director Janet Clayton said that prints are frequently acquired as an affordable way to enjoy artworks from a greater range of well-known artists.
“But these are not mere reproductions”, she said. “The complex creative processes involved in print-making result in a collectable work of art with a distinctive presence.”
Janet Clayton said that the Printed Image exhibition would be complemented by an exhibition in its annexe, Back Street Gallery featuring work by the exciting
young printmaking duo from Grip Editions. “In the intaglio prints of Anne Starling and the monoprints of Rafael Butron, the artist and the printmaker are one
and the same”, said Janet Clayton. This is true printmaking at its finest.”
Marnling Press is operated by master printmaker Michelle Perry in an old warehouse in the backstreets of Chippendale. Whaling Road studio was established
by Diana Davidson in 1978 in North Sydney working in partnership with artists on etchings and monotypes.
