Inaugural VADEA Conference 2009

Encounters with the real:
contemporary art and art education
This conference focuses on building the professional identity and recognition of Visual Arts and
Design educators K-12. Through a program of keynote speakers, the conference objective is to
enhance teachers’ professional knowledge in relation to how the practices of artists, gallery directors,
critics, and curators can be interpreted relative to the choices teachers make as part of their teaching
practice and in the learning opportunities offered to students. Special interest group meetings will
provide forums within which newer and more experienced art and design educators from urban, rural
and remote areas across NSW can actively contribute to the field of art education by exchanging ideas
and debating issues. A range of workshops aims to assist teachers in their translation of artworld
concepts and theoretical frameworks into practical ‘takes’ on the development of case studies and
other approaches to programming. In all, the conference aims to build the profile of the value of
student learning in the Visual Arts and Design and establish a platform for future professional
development and advocacy.
