Working from carefully chosen everyday subjects, Stephanie Monteith paints a strange world.
 Her oil and watercolour paintings portray common
objects such as books, food and clothes; yet the relationships between them contain a tension that keeps one inquiring as to their narrative meaning. Fantastic
and curious each work suggests a humor that is accompanied by a tangible and stirring darkness. Interestingly the unreal nature of her work is rooted in
a disciplined and sustained practice of observation.
Monteith’s handling of oil paint is physical, but also shows an economy in conveying the illusion.
The painting "Wedgetail Feather" presents the elegant remnant of a bird floating above a gyrating landscape that is derived from a patterned silk scarf.
