Moments of Improvisation by Robbi Wymer

"The exhibited works are my struggle with remaining in the present, rather than existing in thoughts of my past or future. The eye, in many of the paintings, symbolises the desire to see the world through a visual lens, of being aware of what is right in front of me. It is also a documentation of my imagination and the intuition and spontaneity of form and colour.

My art has a surreal quality, most of the paintings have a bird entwined in the flowing forms, and these birds are frequent visitors to my house. I live close to the Woronora River where cockatoos, magpies, kookaburras, pelicans, cormorants, cranes and parrots are in abundance. I could not ignore their presence, as their laughing, screeching and warbling, drifted into my home studio.

My experience as a textile designer influences my work. The patterns, swirls, shapes and images, the flowing lines and the colours are reminiscent of the way I construct textiles for the fashion industry. This time I have embraced the traditional platform of the canvas rather than the computer but I really miss the quick key for erasing mistakes. The freedom of the brush, however has been liberating and allows for more imaginative improvisations.

I am currently studying art therapy at the University of Western Sydney. My study about the power of art to heal has led me to create some of these paintings. I believe that through creating art and reflecting on the art products and processes, people can increase awareness of self and others, cope with symptoms, stress, and traumatic experiences and enjoy the life-affirming pleasures of making art."

Exhibition ends Tuesday 7 April 2009.
