Leslie Rice & Sean Lowry @ MOP

GALLERY 1 - Leslie Rice - Untitled It was on a dreary night in March that you beheld the accomplishment of my toils…
It was the night of the nineteenth day in March, to be precise; the day on which the Christian faithful celebrate the feast of Saint Joseph, the carpenter who raised the son he himself did not conceive.
A virgin father, as it were, whose blessed wife was impregnated not with his seed, but by a beam of light immaculate.
On this night, I ask that you ponder the fetid conception of another, less admirable soul…
Consider the motherless birth of a creation so wretched it was considered unworthy of a title, and wandered the earth unnamed.
Consider, if you will, the soul conceived not in the tradition of union, but callously assembled by a presumptuous individual employing the skills of the tradesman Joseph.
Consider, good people, and decide for yourself:
Is this soul as black as it is painted?

GALLERY 2 LAPDANCER II: iconic songs transposed into the language of video art, 2009 Sean Lowry

Together with other smaller portable devices, the laptop computer has become a familiar site for the transfer and dissemination of cultural information. This project, in response to the scale and theatricality of dominant video installation models, utilises the relatively modest exhibition format of the standard laptop computer. Within this ‘unheroic’ exhibition format, it is envisaged that neither sound nor vision will be overtly privillaged.

Sound exerts a powerful influence over the experience of visual culture. Altering existing or established relationships between sound and vision can profoundly affect perception and interpretation. This work aims to elucidate the role of noise, word and melody in creating or shifting meaning within visually centered cultural formations. Occupying an ambiguous space between art and entertain
