ARTIST STATEMENT CAROLINE KHA "Untied" 2008
"Untied" is an ongoing art project that is based on this statement: "That all knots can be untied".
The premise is that all problems have a solution.
I'm currently looking for some knots from anyone interested in participating as a springboard/starting point
for some new drawings or paintings. Participants are asked to think about a problem in their life that they would
like to find a solution to.
These current works are inspired by knots received so far. They have come from Sydney, Adelaide and London.
The original knots received come in all shapes and sizes and made from a variety of material including ribbon,
elastic, ties, earphones, wool and serviettes. Most of these knots have been made from materials that the
participant has been comfortable discarding. Some have stories behind them that are willing to be aired, and some
knots keep their secret. Others are made in a spirit of fun or inspired by dreams.
The physical knot can be an object of beauty as well as possess symbolic value. The knots are intricate and
hand-made objects in their own right.
It is not intended that the works inspired by the knots are a solution to problems. What interests me are the
problems the knot represents and the objects that we discard. Beauty and new ideas can be found in a problem, whether
solvable or not.
Problems are something we often consider ugly or something we would prefer not exist. We often choose to ignore
or avoid delving into them and yet they provide important opportunities for growth.
A difficult experience develops clarity. They challenge us to question our present state and call for us to
reexamine our world. By exploring what we ignore and avoid, we can often learn about ourselves and others.
